MIT Summer Research Program

The MIT Summer Research Program (MSRP) seeks to promote the value of graduate education; to improve the research enterprise through increased diversity; and to prepare and recruit the best and brightest for graduate education at MIT.

MSRP began in 1986 as an institutional effort to address the issue of underrepresentation of African Americans, Mexican Americans, Native Americans, and Puerto Ricans in engineering and science in the United States. Today, this program seeks to identify talented sophomores, juniors, and non-graduating seniors who might benefit from spending a summer on MIT’s campus, working in a research laboratory under the guidance of experienced scientists and engineers who are MIT faculty members, postdoctoral fellows, and advanced graduate students. Students who participate in this program will be better prepared and motivated to pursue advanced degrees, thereby helping to sustain a rich talent pool in critical areas of research and innovation.

PARTICIPANTS RECEIVE

• Supervision by an MIT faculty member and postdoctoral fellow or advanced graduate student
• Individual counseling on academic careers
• Constructive feedback on the need for further undergraduate courses and acquisition of additional laboratory skills
• Opportunity to possibly co-author a scientific paper with the faculty mentor
• Exposure to state of the art research laboratories in MIT departments and over 60 interdisciplinary centers on MIT’s campus
• A weekly stipend
• Round trip travel expenses
• University housing (students are responsible for their food expenses)
• Access to campus facilities (library, athletic, and health facilities)

PROGRAM FEATURES

• Weekly research presentation by MIT faculty
• Weekly seminars on issues directly related to the academic, personal, and professional growth of interns
• Community service day
• Social outings (barbeques, boat cruise, visits to Boston area)
• Preparation of an abstract, research paper, and graduate school statement of purpose

About Training

Training Offered

BISR offers six weeks summer training and support up to six months dissertation programs.

Six weeks Training:
Short term training programs are imparted in the months of May to July at the post graduate level. The program consists of four modules including Microbiology, Biochemistry, Molecular biology, and Bioinformatics. Students carry out defined set of experiments in each module. Each module consists of lecture sessions and hands-on laboratory practices. The last date to apply for the summer training program is March 31.

Six Months Dissertations:
The Institute considers the requests for project work towards partial fulfillment of the respective postgraduate degrees (of at least SIX months’ duration; session I: Jul-Dec; session II: Jan-Jun) for a limited number of students of postgraduate courses of Indian universities for access to its research facilities under the supervision of the Institute’s scientists. The minimal eligibility criterion for consideration of the requests is first division or an equivalent grade or at least 60% of aggregate scores in all major examinations starting from secondary examination onwards. The requests are required to be routed through the contact person enclosing the academic resume of the recommended student(s) and mentioning the duration and the period of proposed project work. The requests so received are considered on the basis of available vacancies. The last date for the receipt of requests for postgraduate research projects are May 31 (for session I) and November 30 (for session II).
Customized training programs can be tailored to meet any university or college’s specific needs for undergraduate students on special consideration.

Who Should Apply

The eligibility criteria for the students for applying for the different training programs are as follows:

• BE Students appearing in their final semester exams with at least an average of 60% marks through out their academic profile.
• Students pursuing M.Sc I-II semester with at least an average of 60% marks through out their academic profile.

Note: Selection will be based on the academic records of all the passed examinations.

Interested candidates are requested to visit the website for registering online and submitting their documents as desired.
