National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research (NCAOR)
NCAOR offers placement to students who wish undertake polar studies related dissertations / internships.
Dissertation or summer internship program is free.
All the laboratory expenses involved in
students programs are met by NCAOR funds. Students have to arrange for
their travel and living expenses. In case of medical emergency,
hospitalization and other treatment expenditures to be met by the
student
Openings for student internships / dissertation:
- Summer Internships (May to July of every year)
[When do you apply – In
January and February of the year you want to take up internship with a
maximum duration of three months, starting May and ending July]
- Dissertation (Any time during the year except May to July)
[When do you apply – Anytime of the year ]
How do you apply?
Go to NCAOR webpage; go through the
projects on the home page to understand what are the areas of research
at NCAOR. Write to a suitable scientist/s with expression of interest in
working for a short project/training under his/her guidance, and obtain
consent of the scientist at NCAOR, in any written form (e-mail, post).
The Head of the Department/ Dean / Principal / Placement officer of the
student’s organization should send a request letter addressed to
Director, NCAOR, indicating student's interest in a specific area along
with (i) brief CV of the student, and (ii) copy of the communication
between the student and scientist at NCAOR.
Application with all above documents to be sent by POST ONLY to Director, National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research, Headland Sada, Vasco, Goa-403 802, Goa.
A student accommodation is provided (at
the residential campus of the institute) to the ones arriving for summer
internships and dissertation projects, on sharing basis for a nominal
fee. Due to limited accommodation facility available in the premises it
is provided on first come first basis, hence no advance booking is entertained.
If your placement letter has a statement
"Accommodation to be arranged by students only", then student(s) MUST
make their own arrangements and then report at NCAOR. If the student can
not make such arrangement, it is advisable not to report and inform us
about cancellation of placement. Food and snacks are available during
working days at the institute’s canteen.
On reporting at NCAOR, the
students have to produce at Office of Administrative Section, NCAOR
(a)Valid student ID card of the college (b) Two passport size photos (c)
Copy of placement letter and (d) Consent from College/ University and
supervisor, if there is a change in dates of
internship/dissertation. Without these they will not be registered.
Discipline in hostel and laboratory campus is mandatory and zero tolerance is observed towards violating students.
Students are not expected to venture in
to the sea for swimming any time during their stay at NCAOR, if so they
are doing at their own risk. They are also not expected to leave the
station without prior permission of their supervisor. Students failing
to abide by above will be asked to quit the campus premature with
notification to their parents and department. Every student has to pay
for the accommodation and submit e-copy of the work report/ dissertation
before they wind-up their stay at NCAOR

Educational visits (for all students)
For educational visit, there are other
opportunities for other levels of students from Goa and other places.
Prior intimation and confirmation of the same by email or post or fax
should be there. Change of time and date is not encouraged

Do you want to do research in Polar sciences?
[for enrolling as Junior Research Fellow at NCAOR]
PG students, after successfully passing
CSIR-UGC NET exam are welcome to join Doctoral programme of the
institute. Such students are designated at ‘Junior Research Fellows
(JRF)’ and get fixed stipend as per the CSIR-UGC norms directly from
CSIR-UGC. Post-doctoral students are designated as Research Associates.
For working as JRF if the candidate has
funding, a formal letter to be written to the Director, NCAOR along with
relevant certificate of fellowship and mark sheets. The NET-Lectureship
candidates need to get funding support in a suitable project before
applying. They may look out for openings on NCAOR webpage under openings
for JRF as and when it is advertised and appear for the interview on
the prescribed date and time.
